Public Clouds

ReliaCloud is an IaaS service that launched in 2010. They offer both cloud servers and storage. Their cloud storage product is accessible via either nfs mount or https. Their management platform includes a web UI and API. All pricing is on-demand.

Cloudant offers fully managed and hosted CouchDB hostings. To do so, they have forked the open source CouchDB project and created BigCouch, which while backwords compatible with CouchDB requests, supports more advanced clustering capabilities.

RimuHosting is a VPS and dedicated server provider based out of New Zealand. They have been in operation since 2003. They currently offer monthly VPS services in New Zealand, Australia, London and Texas.

Cloud Central is a cloud server provider based out of Australia. From their data center throughput and latency is very good to Australia and other APAC locations. Cloud Central offers on-demand pricing for cloud servers from 256MB-15.5GB in size.

Heroku is a platform for deploying Ruby/Rails applications that launched in 2007. It runs on top of Amazon's EC2, but this is fully abstracted from users. Heroku offers both shared and dedicated deployment options and very flexible usage-based pricing.

Zerigo offers VPS (monthly) and cloud servers (hourly) out of it's Denver, CO data center. They offer servers from 256MB-4GB. They also offer DNS and "Watchdog" monitoring services.

AppHarbor markets itself as "Azure done right". They support .NET deployments using a simple GIT push.

Voxel owns and operates their own data centers and network since 1999. They offer cloud servers from their New York, Amsterdam and Singapore data centers. They also operate the VoxCast CDN. Voxel offers both a Flash/Air UI and API management capabilities.

SymetriQ is an enterprise IaaS provider based on Glasgow, UK. They offer Windows, Linux and OpenSolaris VMs in public or private networks.

AirVM provides impressive specs at a cost effective price point. Their infrastructure is based on VMWare, Fault Tolerant SANs using Raid 10, Intel Westmere CPUs and support for Windows and Linux. Pricing starts at $0.055/hr Linux and $0.065 Windows.

AT&T's Synaptic cloud service advertises both compute and storage services with on-demand pricing and self service or API provisioning.

eApps provides Xen based IaaS cloud services. Their cloud includes off instance high speed storage and includes advanced features like automatic hardware failover.

Linode is a VPS provider with many cloud features such as on-demand provisioning and a fully functional API. Linode has been offering VPS services since 2003. Their VPS management platform is easy to use and very powerful including features like imaging.

Dynomesh is a 100% Australian owned and operated high performance cloud hosting company, based in Melbourne. They offer on-demand compute resources, load balancing and shared MySQL and Mongo database services.

ElasticHosts is a US-based cloud server provider. They have 2 data centers in the UK and expanded recently to a 3rd in Texas. Although they offer on-demand pricing, they steer users towards monthly which are 50% less per hour than on demand.

Gandi.net is based in France and began as a domain registrar in 1999. Around 2007, they began offering VPS services which they continue to offer today. This service is now referred to as "Cloud VPS" and offered for a flat monthly service fee.

Orion VM is an Australian provider run out of the tier3 Vocus Networks data center in Sydney. The created a proprietary high performance distributed storage architecture based on 40 Gb/s infiniband. They offer both commodity and enterprise IaaS services.

VPS.net has offered VPS services since 2004. They currently offer VPSs in data centers located in US West (Utah), US East (Atlanta), US Central (Chicago) and EU (London). They also resell Akamai and Highwinds CDN services for very reasonable prices.

The Tata Communications InstaCompute platform provides IaaS capabilities currently in India and Singapore. Tata also recently acquired BitGravity, a CDN provider specializing in the delivery of broadcast-quality video and live broadcasting.

Logicworks, based in lower Manhattan NYC, has provided managed hosting solutions since around 2002. They now offer variations of both managed and cloud services include hybrid clouds, private clouds, and their public cloud service infiniCloud.

OpSource is a VMware-based cloud provider. They offer cloud servers and storage with on-demand pricing. Their web management UI is intuitive and they also offer an API.

Microsoft is a late arrival to the cloud market, but is now dedicating significant resources to their Azure cloud services. Azure offers a .NET Platform, Storage, CDN, SQL Server Database and Messaging services, all available with on-demand pricing.

Nirvanix offers a "Storage Delivery Network", basically a hybrid of cloud storage and content delivery network. Users can configure their account to use 1, 2 or 3 geographically distributed storage nodes.

Google offers an assortment of cloud services including the AppEngine Platform and the Google Storage service. Google is very innovative and aggressive in this market and offers generous free usage allocations for these services and paid upgrade options.

serverloft is a subsidiary of PlusServer AG. They currently offer cloud services based out of the datadock data center located in Strasbourg Germany. They have also partnered with Level 3 to provide CDN services.

Blue Box provides a variety of hosting solutions including managed Rails, PHP and Java application servers, email and database hosting and virtual servers.

Ninefold is an Australian cloud provider with support for both Linux and Windows servers.

Box.net provides an easy to use cloud-based file sharing service. This service includes integrated collaboration and security controls. If you are looking for a storage provider with simple web-based management capabilities, Box.net is a good choice.

Storm on Demand is a spin-off of dedicated hosting provider LiquidWeb, which owns and operates 3 data centers in Lansing, MI. Storm on Demand offers shared and "bare-metal" cloud servers from 2-48GB. Storm also offers advanced features like load balancing

Salesforce offers cloud services: Force.com lets users define and manage databases, forms, etc. using a browser GUI. Database.com is a cloud based relational database - basically Force.com without a GUI and more flexible and affordable API usage options.

Joyent launched in 2005 as a platform for sharing business data. In 2007 they offered application-focused virtualized environments called "accelerators". Today they offer daily billed SmartMachines (OpenSolaris servers) and a javascript "SmartPlatform".

GoGrid is the cloud computing spin-off of ServePath and ColoServe which have provide dedicated hosting and co-location since 2002. The GoGrid cloud service launched in 2007 and offers Servers, Storage and EdgeCast CDN services with on-demand billing.

CDNetworks provides a suite of web performance acceleration services including content acceleration (CDN), storage, DNS, streaming and cloud load balancing. The core of their services center around their content delivery network.

Flexiscale is a UK-based cloud server provider that originally launched in 2007. They revamped their service in 2010 to the "Flexiscale 2.0" platform offering upgraded hardware and better performance. They price their service using a pre-pay point system.

Terremark was one of the first providers of VMware's vCloud Express cloud platform. In addition to vCloud, they also offer enterprise VMware solutions. They operate out of the NAP data center in Miami, FL.

WebAppCabaret is a Load Balanced platform for deploying JAVA, GRAILS, Ruby/Rails, PHP, Python/Django, and CFML applications. It runs on top infrastructures of GoGrid, Softlayer, and others. Users are able to simply drag-and-drop applications to the Cloud.

Akamai manages the largest content delivery network on the Internet and handles a significant portion of Internet traffic for media files and video streaming. Many large media and technology companies use Akamai's content delivery and streaming services.

Limelight provides content delivery and streaming services. They are a significant play in the CDN market providing services to many large media and technology companies including Microsoft, MS NBC and MTV.

Newservers is one of very few IaaS providers offering "bare-metal" cloud servers. These servers are deployed onto physical servers using real-time disk re-imaging. Newservers runs out of the NAP of the Americas data center in Miami.

CloudSigma is an IaaS cloud provider based out of Switzerland. Their cloud servers have no fixed instance sizes, offer full root control with a free choice of operating systems and open networking. Latency within the EU is generally very good.

Cotendo is a Anycast content delivery network. Their focus is more on the enterprise market, offering not only CDN, but also dynamic site acceleration, DNS, CDN balancing and other features. Pricing is negotiated based on a monthly commit.

Zetta's enterprise cloud storage service supports many different access methods including HTTP, NFS, FTP, sFTP, rsync and WebDAV. Storage is protected and secured using Raid6 N+3 encoding. Zetta charges monthly based on a predefined storage commitment.

Dyn Inc. is an IaaS provider offering managed DNS services. Their managed DNS offers various service add-ons such as GSLB, CDN balancing, and monitor-based load balancing.

City Cloud is a leading Scandinavian IaaS provider. They offer cloud servers ranging in size from 0.5 GB to 16 GB and 1-8 processor cores. They also include 1000 GB bandwidth with all instances.

CacheFly operates one of the largest anycast-based content delivery networks consisting of 19 PoPs located in the US, EU and APAC. CacheFly's performance is generally very good based on our speedtest. CacheFly pricing plans start at $99/month for 256GB.

NetHosting provides dedicated servers, VPS and cloud services. Their data center is located in Orem Utah.

CloudFlare was a runner-up for the 2010 TechCruch Disrupt. They provide a unique CDN and security service via website proxying over their anycast network. To use the service, you simply assign DNS for your domain to them, and they take care of the rest.

Hosting.com offers a variety of services from website hosting, to various flavors of cloud (Express, Enterprise, Private), dedicated hosting and co-location. Hosting.com virtualization infrastructure is based on VMWare.

Brightbox is a UK based provider specializing in Rails hosting and MySQL hosting. They also offer cloud hosting, load balancing and CDN services (through CDNetworks).

Rackspace has been providing managed dedicated hosting since 1998. The Rackspace Cloud was launched in 2009 after Rackspace acquired VPS provider Slicehost. Their cloud services currently includes servers, storage and Limelight CDN.

EdgeCast provides a suite of content delivery services including it's staple CDN as well as site acceleration, storage, and their application delivery network (ADN).

Cloud Cache provides global website caching. It essentially provides global proxies to your website which reduce latency and improve overall performance.

SoftLayer got its start with managed dedicated hosting in 2006. They own and operate 3 data centers in Texas, Seattle and DC. SoftLayer began offering cloud services in 2009 including Servers, Storage and Internap's CDN service.

BlueLock is one of the original VMWare vCloud Express cloud provider. Beginning October 2010, BlueLock will be canceling their vCloud Express platform and focusing on Enterprise VMWare Hosting only.

AWS is the guerilla in the room in terms of cloud computing. It was initially created to enable better management of their own infrastructure. AWS offers Servers (EC2), Storage (S3), CDN (CloudFront), Databases (SimpleDB & RDS) and many advanced features.

SiteHost is a New Zealand based provider offering VPS, dedicated servers and co-location. VPS is based on Xen and offers VMs ranging in size from 384MB to 12GB billed monthly.

Speedyrails offers VPS, Ruby on Rails hosting, Content Delivery (via Edgecast CDN) and bundled Dynect DNS services. They currently operate out of 2 different data centers located in Quebec, CA.

MaxCDN is an anycast-based CDN. They offer aggressive pricing (currently $39.95 for 1TB) and advanced features including PoP or origin pull, media streaming, API, and a nice web management UI. Price to performance ratio is excellent compared to other CDNs

Dotcloud provides many pre-assembled technology stacks deployed to EC2 including Rails, PHP, PostgreSQL, node.js, Cassandra and many more. The dotcloud CLI allows users to deploy and manage stacks without worrying about complex configurations.

Internap provides a variety of IT services including CDN, cloud storage, co-location and managed hosting.

Stackable provides pre-built web stacks for PHP, django, MySQL and VPS's. Stackable takes care of many of the administrative tasks involved with setting up, configuring and managing web stacks. You simply upload your application files and everything works

Dediserve is a Xen-based IaaS provider with offices in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They offer both cloud server and virtual data center services.

UltraDNS provides enterprise DNS services for many large Internet websites. In addition to standard DNS, they also provide add-on services such as GSLB, load balancing, website monitoring, DNS failover, and more.

LoadDNS provides global IP Anycast DNS services using their network of 14 globally distributed DNS nodes.

DNS.com provides Anycast managed DNS with 14 anycast nodes globally.

DNS Made Easy offers low cost IP Anycast DNS and add-on services such as site failover and global traffic director.

Easy DNS offers both IP Anycast DNS hosting and domain registration. Large websites such as php.net and ycombinator use Easy DNS.

DNS Park provides primary and secondary managed DNS hosting and various email continuity and filtering services.

Bit Refinery is a VMware Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider based out of Denver, Colorado. Services include VMware virtualization technology hosted within a fully redundant infrastructure.

Nettica provides a comprehensive list of DNS services for home and business including primary or secondary DNS, dynamic DNS, monitoring and DNS failover.

NGENIX is a Russian operated and targeted CDN (Content Delivery Network). Their network consists of PoPs (points of presence) located within the 'last mile' with 350 operators, 100 of which provide services in Russian regions.

SwiftServe is a Singapore based CDN (Content Delivery Network) whose focus is on content delivery in the Asian market. Their services include large file delivery, streaming video, website acceleration and content security.

CDNvideo is a Russian based CDN which primarily focuses on video content delivery including both streaming and progressive. Their video streaming support includes RTMP, RTSP, SilverLight, QuickTime and HTTP Live Streaming.

Cloud Foundry is a platform-as-a-service for building, deploying, and running cloud apps using Spring for Java developers, Rails and Sinatra for Ruby developers, Node.js and other JVM frameworks including Grails.

ZoneEdit provides low cost DNS hosting. They have been in the DNS hosting business for many years.

PowerDNS offers DNS server software and hosted DNS services.

eNom provides domain registration and reselling services as well as website and DNS hosting.

ZettaGrid offers Australian cloud computing services, including Windows and Linux based IaaS server packages, cloud networks, virtual desktops and resource pools. Their services are designed using VMware's vCloud.

Open Hosting is a trusted and reliable provider of cloud hosting solutions based in Vienna, VA. Since 2003, they've been exclusively committed to cloud hosting using the Linux KVM virtualization stack.
